Improving the Wave Forecasting in the Catalan Coast (WAM Cycle 4.5)
نویسندگان
چکیده
The present study investigates the conspicuous shortcomings of the whitecapping dissipation model implemented in WAM Cycle 4.5 [1], following the lead of the work of [2] and [3]. Its dependence on an overall wave steepness unavoidably yields systematic errors when more than one wave system is propagating. The complex orography and highly variable winds at the Catalan coast lead to fetchand duration-limited wave conditions near the Ebro delta. The incidence of swell trains during the development of these wind-seas coming from land favors the development of bimodal spectra. Although a comprehensive tuning of the free parameters of the dissipation function is performed, effectively improving the general subestimation of wave periods, it is strongly recommended to incorporate updated dissipation models, which avoid the dependence on an overall wave steepness and provide a more physical description of the wave breaking mechanism[4]; [5].

[1] A Whole atmosphere Data Assimilation System (WDAS) is used to simulate the January 2009 sudden stratospheric warming (SSW). WDAS consists of the Whole Atmosphere Model (WAM) and the 3-dimensional variational (3DVar) analysis system GSI (Grid point Statistical Interpolation), modified to be compatible with the WAMmodel. An incremental analysis update (IAU) scheme was implemented in the data ...
متن کاملAssessment of the importance of the current-wave coupling in the shelf ocean forecasts
The effects of wave-current interactions on shelf ocean forecasts is investigated in the framework of the MFSTEP (Mediterranean Forecasting System Project Towards Enviromental Predictions) project. A one way sequential coupling approach is adopted to link the wave model (WAM) to the circulation model (SYMPHONIE). The coupling of waves and currents has been done considering four main processes: ...
متن کامل20 Years of Operational Forecasting at Oceanweather
The rapid evolution of numerical wave prediction models over the past three decades has been closely linked with the desire to improve operational wave forecasting systems. For example, the P-T-B directional spectral wave model (Pierson et al., 1966), supported initially to develop new wave climate data for improved ship design, was implemented at the Fleet Numerical Oceanography (FNOC, now FNM...

In the Tsunami of Dec. 26, 2004, although there was a large distance between the earthquake center of Indian Ocean and coastal cities of Iran, the Tsunami waves brought some damages in Chabahar coast. This means that if the earthquake center was closer to Iran, Iran’s coastal regions would have confronted serious danger... In the present study, we used ComMIT software (Community Model Int...
